Earnings in PPP terms: The average value of that indicator across European countries was 30948.97 euro in 2011. The highest value of 50896 euro was recorded in Germany whereas the lowest value of 10366 euro was recorded in Bulgaria. The chart displayed below is based on data from Eurostat.
The total earnings equal the income of the employee plus the employer's social security contributions and payroll taxes (where applicable). The purchasing power parity calculation adjusts incomes for differences in taxes. The question is "What would be the income if everyone in the EU paid the average EU prices for goods and services?" In other words, we measure real income, the differences in actual purchasing power across countries.
